NOTES: Killing two birds with one stone here. The photographs above show a limestone window and lime render that have been coated in copperas tinted limewash. Copperas or hydrated ferrous sulphate (not far removed from rust I imagine), may be dissolved in water to produce a translucent wash with a golden hue (search the net for a photo of Stowe House/School, Buckingham, for an example of this. I applied some about 6 years ago!). The example above came pre-mixed (quite strongly too) with limewash.
With or without copperas or any colour pigment, limewash (if applied correctly) is fully breathable. This is of paramount importance and allows moisture to escape a building without taking any covering materials with it.* Even worse, the moisture may remain trapped. This will not only cause timber beams to rot, but in time, brick and stone also!
Limewash has a matt, chalk like finish, devoid of any sheen and has subtle variations of tone. Zoom in on the window above for a closer look. |

* Look for hard, cement based renders and paints popping off of old buildings. Consequently this will give unnecessary openings for further ingress of water. |
